This work belongs to the Ramona series, inspired by the unexpected presence of a sloth that often appeared in the garden of the artist’s family home in Venezuela. Over the years, Ramona became a familiar figure, almost like a quiet guardian of that space. While living abroad, the artist’s parents would regularly send photographs of Ramona, which became a way of staying connected not only to home, but also to the sense of wonder Ramona evoked.
The series developed as a kind of portraiture of Ramona, based on those images sent from afar. Although Ramona is no longer there, the works preserve her presence, transforming memory and longing into visual form. Through this body of work, the artist took significant steps toward abstraction, exploring new forms of expression and incorporating embroidered elements into the compositions. The result is a deeply personal yet universal meditation on memory, absence, and transformation, conveyed through a language of abstraction that continues to evolve.
The title Insólito Universo is drawn from a radio program of the artist’s childhood in Venezuela, one that blended strange stories with a sense of mystery, transporting listeners into what felt like a parallel world. As a child, the artist experienced it with both fascination and fear—it was unsettling yet magical, as if opening a door to another galaxy. By evoking this memory, the series channels that same tension between wonder and unease, creating an “unusual universe” where personal history, imagination, and abstraction coexist.
